Frequently Asked Questions
What is debating?
Debating focuses heavily on students forming cohesive arguments in teams of three or four students. This is done by arguing two sides to a topic, usually that involves changing something - for example: “we should make the working week shorter/longer”. The aim is to teach logic, persuasion and argumentation skills.
Will my child have fun?
We aim to make our content as fun and engaging as possible! A typical one hour lesson with Masters Academy balances important new content alongside activities that are engaging but also designed to reinforce the weekly lesson. For example, when learning about how to convince others about the need for change in a society, students are asked to design a new product to be released to the market, and then pitch that product to their classmates. In any lesson we aim to have half the lesson dedicated to speaking activities. Not only are they great for practicing speaking skills in class; they also improve speaking confidence and retention of knowledge.
What if my child has never done debating?
At Masters Academy, we recognise that everyone has different skill levels and experience. Some students will be natural speakers from the get-go, whilst others will need help and guidance to build their confidence along the way. We are experienced with working with debaters and public speakers of all skill levels, and balancing the diverse range of needs of students.
What if my child is still unsure?
We understand that starting on your journey to communications excellence a big commitment, and we want all our students to enjoy their time in the program. That is why we check in with all our students in the first few weeks of the program and make sure they are enjoying the classes. In the event that your child is finding it too hard to juggle their classes, contact us in the first 3 weeks and we are happy to offer a full refund for the remainder of their course.
If you would like to talk to one of our friendly representatives you can get in touch with our office (9am - 4pm, Mon - Fri) and we’ll be happy to answer any of your questions.
